I’ve had several attempts to import (via the excellent CSV plugin) my spreadsheet. But I’m still struggling with how to address some of our specific fields.
Below are our fields (slightly massaged to be easier to import):
Asset Number = DC Identifier Asset Location (this is the physical location of the item in our library - most important bit)
Level = Tags
State Sub-level = Tags
Category = Collections
Short Title = DC Subject
Description = DC Description Season (peculiar to Sth Hemisphere cricket - season July - June e.g 1930/31, 1988/89 etc)
Date = DC Date (sort of) Condition Date Catalogued
Image (I’m hoping the importer somehow does images - haven’t got there yet)
Image Link (redundant if the image importer works) Additional Comment (e.g. donated by)
It’s the bolded fields I’m struggling with. I feel that I’m close to cracking this, but I’m not sure if I’m missing the point or something.
I’ll kind of answer my own question. I don’t know whether it’s not a satisfactory solution (archivist-wise).
I’ve created an Item Type for my particular organisation that includes the fields I require. Into that Item Type, I’ve added some existing and newly created fields.
I’m just about to attempt an import, so fingers crossed!
skb,
I’m new to Omeka and the forum, so forgive me if this is a question with an obvious elsewhere. Am I right in thinking that you’ve created a new item type to ‘remove’ (or at least hide) some of the Dublin Core fields and add additional fields for your own purposes? I’ve installed a copy of Omeka on my currently offline webserver on my own PC as I want to build a searchable catalogue of books, and academic papers related to an archaeological excavation, that will be associated with the website for that excavation, and I want that database to eventually be publically accessible to ‘guests’. There will be no downloadable material or images in the databse, but simply a searchable catalogue of references.
If anyone else can point me in a direction that might also help, I’ll be grateful. (note that I am the webmaster of the excavation website, which is using MySQL and PHP on a Joomla site.
Thanks
I’m not an expert by any means, but all the DC fields are still available for each item but if the data is blank, those fields just don’t display.
I experimented quite a bit before I found “the answer” (for us). I suggest a little dabbling - you can always delete records that aren’t fit for your purpose.
Good luck!
Hi. I’m new to Omeka and I am having a similar issue in which my data does not neatly line up with the Dublin Core fields. How did you create a custom Item Type?
The answer here depends on which Omeka platform you are using.
For Omeka Classic, the answer is fairly straightforward: Item Types - Omeka Classic User Manual You’ll want especially to look at the section on Creating Item Type fields.
