Hi. Confirming that in order to update to a newer version of a theme, one must delete all the theme files (so collections, common, css, items, javascript…README.md, theme.ini) and then can upload the freshly downloaded theme zip.

If you’re just using a theme as-is, not making manual edits to the files or things like that, what I’d suggest is deleting the theme’s folder entirely (the folder with the theme’s name, e.g. “seasons”). The zipped copy of the updated theme will have that same-named folder inside and you can just replace the old one with the new one.
The same advice applies to plugins.
