Moving media to other items?

We are omeka beginners and are currently exploring the great concept of omeka. While entering the first items, the question arose as to whether it is possible to move media to another item later if necessary. I have not yet found any mention of this in the documentation.
Is there a solution for this?

HI @olaf.boehlk ,

I personally haven’t ever had to move media. I’d be interested in hearing more about the use case where media would need to be moved.

I feel like I would accomplish this with a CSV import to attach the media to the correct item.

We want to organize series of photographs by assigning them to an object, for example “Photos of place X”. However, it could happen that we want to change this assignment again, if criteria for a “finer” subdivision would arise, e.g. “Photos of the south side of place X”, then the media would have to be assigned to a new object. Or am I fundamentally misunderstanding this and we should organize it otherwise?

I would think that I’d want to make each piece or media an Item and use a custom vocabulary on the location to draw them together. Then that controlled vocab can be updated as needed.

Yes, that would probably be the best option. It just seems so attractive that you could easily combine several media together into a common occasion or reference point “in one go”… And then to have the “freedom” to change this assignment at a later date…

With the native bulk edit functions in Omeka S and/or Data Cleaning or CSVImport would allow you to update those connections relatively easily.

Many thanks for the hint. We are currently making our first steps in omeka-s. I’ll take a closer look at it…

Since items can also be parts of multiple item sets, why not do it that way? The “item” would be the metadata that goes with the picture, and the picture itself would be the “media”. I haven’t played with item sets a lot yet, but in many ways you can do the same things with an item set that you can with an item (I’m talking about in page blocks).

That would possibly also be a solution, although I would then prefer references or “is part of”…

The whole problem only arises because omeka-s allows you to assign several media to an item. But what happens if this “main item” is to be deleted, for example, and some of its media are to be assigned to another item?

It makes sense that several media can be assigned to an item. But then I think it should also be possible to move them from one item to another.
