I’m using the Geonames for standardizing the locations of various items, for a documentation and history project. Is it possible to create maps or to use the spatial information of the geonames database, for visualization?

That’s a very good question! I assume you’re using the Value Suggest module to allow editors to link to the Geonames terms. Geonames has an API which can return the latitude and longitude of the place, and the bounding box of the geographical area, so theoretically an Omeka module could be devised to look up the Geonames value and retrieve that information, creating appropriate linked data to drive the Mapping module which can then visualise all your items on a map.
I don’t know whether anyone has produced such a module: hoping someone else knows.
