Linking to items in DSpace Repository, but not importing?

We are interested in using the Dspace module to connect to a large amount of audio files. We’d like to create an exhibit around these items. However, due to the large file sizes and amount of files, we dont want them to be imported into OmekaS, rather, we just want to link out to them from within OmekaS. This is possible- correct?

Also, do you think OmekaS is the best tool to create this kind of exhibit?

That is exactly what the DSpace Connector is designed for: to import the item metadata and link back to the file. Short of processing smaller service copies of those files, this approach seems like a good way to go.
