How to display pdf and tiff thumbnails using universal viewer and scripto plugins

Hi -

I have installed the following:

omeka 2.4.1
mediawiki 1.26.3
PHP 5.6.29
scripto 2.2
universal viewer 2.4.2
Thanks Roy Theme

and uploaded some images for transcription at this url:

http://www.nsmlv.org/omeka/items/show/1

The thumbnails for the pdf and tiff files do not display. I tried changing the default viewer for Scripto to the Universal Viewer as described here:

but it didn’t fix the problem and I rolled back the change. How can I make the pdf thumbnails display? It would be nice for the tiff thumbnails to also display, but it’s not essential.

Set the debug mode (https://omeka.org/codex/Retrieving_error_messages), there is an error, but I can’t see it.

Note that in your theme, the path to the transcribe.php should be “scripto/index/transcribe.php”.

Hi -

The transcribe.php file was copied to this location:

/home/xxx/nsmlv.org/omeka/themes/default/scripto/index

I turned on the debug mode and opened the items page again. The thumbnails still don’t display, but there was no error message. I did find a note here suggesting that two copies of the pdf file are needed to display a thumbnail, but there aren’t any instructions on how to do it:

I can’t see the error page. Modify the file “.htaccess” at the root of Omeka to remove the “#” before “SetEnv APPLICATION_ENV development”.

Next, I’ll be able to check the issue in the manifest for the Universal Viewer (http://www.nsmlv.org/omeka/iiif/1/manifest).

Thank you, I re-enabled the error capture and there is an error message at http://www.nsmlv.org/omeka/iiif/1/manifest.

It seems that you use a non standard server (files seem not stored on the file system).

I fixed it and published it on https://github.com/Daniel-KM/UniversalViewer4Omeka. It will probably resolve your issue, but similar issues may occur with some other plugins that manage files. If not, I have a second fix, but it implies some heavy changes I don’t want.

Rename the plugin folder to UniversalViewer when installing a plugin from Github.

Don’t forget to set the .htaccess as it was.

Hello -

I copied these files from github and replaced the existing files on my web server (which is a Dreamhost server with a one-click Omeka install) in the nsmlv.org/omeka/plugins/UnviversalViewer directory:

controllers/ImageController.php
views/helpers/liifManifest.php
views/helpers/liifInfo.php

Unfortunately, the thumbnails for pdf and tiff files still don’t display. I have not yet turned off error logging.

Dreamhost has some default settings that are not standard. So you have to enable two things (perhaps only one) on your server, then re upload the files:

If it works, try to reset your change in the plugin to keep it upstream.

Hi -

I think the php changes have been correctly made. The php environment information is shown below. The tiff and pdf files were reloaded, but the thumbnails still don’t display.

There is probably no more issue with UniversalViewer. The same is happening for the thumbnails and for the UniversalViewer. If you remove the tiff, the UniversalViewer will work. The manifests are fine for jpg files (http://www.nsmlv.org/omeka/iiif-img/20/info.json), but not for tiff (http://www.nsmlv.org/omeka/iiif-img/27/info.json).

The config seems ok, tiff is supported in imagick and convert, so I don’t understand the issue and I can’t try it, I don’t know the system file adapter that is used.
