Freedom Theme Accessibility Issues

Wasn’t sure if this is best placed here or the Themes channel but we built an exhibit using the Freedom theme and discovered the following accessibility issues:

  1. Header search box button lacks discernable text.
  2. Showing # to # of # results text at bottom of items page fails color contrast.
  3. Empty link error with element.
  4. Broken skip link id=skipnav" href=“#content”>Skip to main content element.

We have scripts in place to fix these but I wanted to report here as it would be better fixed within the theme code. Thanks.

Thanks for your note on these issues. Fixes for all of these have actually already been in the works and will be included in the next release.

@amiller - Sounds good! We are finding some additional issues. Can you confirm those will also be resolved in the next release? Thanks!

  1. iFrame elements lack an accessible name. Here is one of our examples: Letter from Patricia McIlrath to J.C. Mickel · Patricia McIlrath, Starr Women's Hall of Fame · Digital Exhibits @ UMKC Libraries
  2. The Select media presence element on the Search page lacks an accessible name.

The next release of Freedom will include a number of fixes to the Advanced Search form, including correcting that missing label on select[name="has_media"]. In-progress issues can be accessed in the theme’s repository if that might serve as a helpful resource to review against your own testing.

The iFrame issue is not theme-specific here and will be looked into for future updates to Omeka S. Thank you for catching that!

A fix that pulls in configured accessible names for iFrames has been added and will be included in the next version release.
