Coming Soon: Omeka S version 3.0.0

We’ve been hard at work for a while now on the next major version of Omeka S, and today we’re ready to announce a release date: Omeka S version 3.0.0 will be releasing during the week of October 5th.

This release contains some major changes to the way that item selection for sites works, many new features, and some big changes under the hood as well, in particular a move to the new home and name of Zend Framework, the Laminas project. We’ve shared some details about some of these changes at a little more length before, in our request for feedback on the alpha release.

The Laminas changes in particular will require updates to modules. Today, we have a new page on the Omeka S developer documentation outlining the relevant changes for module developers; for most, it should come down to a simple “find-and-replace” operation. Also today, the new strings for version 3.0.0 have been uploaded to Transifex today so our community translators can have a head start.

We’ll be using this time before the release to make sure all the Omeka Team modules and themes are updated and ready to release alongside version 3.0.0, and to give some time for the other developers in the community to do the same.
