I’ve been asked by a charity to develop a cataloging proposal for a small international traveller’s collection that comprises:
- physical objects measuring as long as 2.5 meters (spears!) to small ring sized objects
-large maps and newspaper/magazine coverage
-diaries
-travel documentation like flight tickets etc
-pictures, slides, negatives
I have installed omeka classic on a server to experiment.
I am used to working with and generating websites, scanning, photography etc. This is the first time that I have tackled something like this.
Where I hope to receive some advice is in the definition of Collections.
This is my current thinking.
- Slides and photos belong in a Collection. There’s an estimated 100k of them currently classified by country and year, sometimes date. On many slides there is a very small description comment and generally somewhere there will probably be a diary entry about that visit. I guess I can link to the appropriate page of the diary?
Is there any sense in having sub-collections for countries and or years? - Physical objects collection. Would country, date, location, description, size be enough. Possibly also linked to a diary entry.
- Published documents collection like maps and magazine/newspaper coverage of the traveller presumably are still copyrighted. What would we have to do to protect ourselves from claims.
- Diary collection, dates and countries are obviously important but is there anything else basic that should be captured apart from the text itself.
- Miscellaneous documentation collection could be tickets, receipts for pamphlet printing etc. I guess date, country and description would be enough?
I just have the feeling somebody who has done this before will leap up and say, you’ve forgotten this, that and the other which is obvious to them.
