Can I keep my files in OneDrive?

Hi, complete newcomer here, not just to Omeka but to digital asset management in general. I’m a software engineer who has volunteered to be the church historian, and I’m busy scanning the church’s artifacts and they are currently stored on the church’s OneDrive. I want to make these artifacts visible and searchable to the general public, and Omeka is looking really good!
My question is - can I keep the files in OneDrive, or would they have to be transferred to some kind of Omeka-specific server?

The standard way Omeka works, it will keep copies of the files you add to it locally, on the server where Omeka runs.

There are options to store the files elsewhere, on cloud storage for example, which you can use, but even those generally require you to add the files to Omeka and have it store them, so it knows where they’re located and what the filenames are, etc.

So generally, the answer is that Omeka doesn’t run off the files from their original location, it keeps its own copy of them.
