Best practice for uploading/previewing videos

There seem to be two ways to incorporate videos into your Omeka site:

  1. Upload video
  2. Youtube/Vimeo plugin

Option 1. can take up quite a bit of storage space and there doesn’t appear to be a way to adjust the preview size (is there a way?).

Option 2. does not save the record (and they could be removed from their respective platform). Furthermore, it appears only admins can ingest videos via this method (unless there’s a way these can be incorporated into the Contribution page or similar?).

Does anyone have any best practices around videos on Omeka? Any input would be helpful!

If you adjust your security settings properly, you can also use an embed code from the video hosting service (YouTube or Vimeo) in an html field. That would include item properties, simple pages, and exhibit page blocks.

Thanks for the reply. Is there a way to similarly change the dimensions of videos hosted on the site itself, e.g. of the item preview size?

I’m not totally sure what you mean by item preview here, but the HTML5 Media plugin allows you to change the video dimensions and also offers a “responsive” option where the video just takes up as much space as is available.
