Backup on old server and restore on new server

I will be switching to a different server soon. To move the data from one server to the other, am I doing a back and restore?

We have a manual page on moving your site to another server.

The basic upshot is that you need to get both the SQL database contents (by bringing over a dump/backup) and the files from the current server over to the new one.

We are going from Ubuntu to CentOS. Since the dump would do the entire file system, would Rsync be better?

You generally aren’t moving the whole file system: as the manual says really you want to move over a dump of the database plus a couple specific folders from the install. Grabbing the whole web folder of the install is an option too, of course.

rsync is a fine option for copying the files.
