Hello, I’m setting up a new install of Omeka S and am considering using Any Cloud for it. I have two questions though that I’m hoping someone can answer before I commit to it.
Do I need to start using Any Cloud from the beginning, or can I switch to it later? Basically, if I have items already on my server, what happens to those if I decide to start using Any Cloud?
And how does thumbnail generation work with Any Cloud? Is it straightforward? Is that still somehow handled by Imagemagick on my server?

The thumbnails are handled on your server before they are uploaded to the cloud storage provider. When using a cloud storage option, there are some features that are disabled in Omeka, like the ability to regenerate thumbnails for existing resources.
You can start without AnyCloud and then switch to it later; you will just have to upload all of your existing uploaded files to the cloud storage provider manually. Likewise, if you were to start with AnyCloud and then switch to local file storage, you could copy all of your files from cloud storage to your server.

Create Missing Thumbnails can generate thumbnails even when using AnyCloud (it downloads the original file first).
But the point still stands: some modules won’t work if they expect files to be locally stored
