Using a static page as homepage

We’re working on updating an old (Omeka .9 or 1) site. The upgrade has gone fine but the project leads really want to keep the old homepage. (which has a custom layout and images). We have it as an html file.

Is there a good way to use this as the homepage, other than setting it as the index for a directory and then putting the whole Omeka site in a subdirectory? We don’t want to mess up the index.php file too much.

You probably just want to change the index.php file of the theme you’re using to have the matching custom markup you want from your old homepage.

Changes to the index.php in a theme will only affect what the public homepage looks like and won’t touch other pages or the admin interface.
