Teaching on Omeka - can students create their own environments?

All,
I am new to Omeka. I am learning it because I have a class where each student is to build their own sample digital library. This would entail adding their own items and personalizing the interface for their collection only. I have an instance of Omeka hosted on Libraryhost, which allows for multiple collections and so on. If anyone has done something like this, can you PM me or reply here so I can ask some questions? My first question is what type of user (researcher, contributor, etc.) can do these things.
