Pagination_links function works in browse templates. It does not work in show templates. Is there a way to use it on items show page?

What would you want the pagination links to do on a show page?
A pdf viewer is embedded and multiple pdf pages are displayed via pagination. I can manually create a pagination link, but want to know if pagination_links will work.
