ItemRelations - relations vocabulary translation

Hi,
My site 3d-muzeum.pl uses Polish language, so I have to translate everything.
I try to change texts for ItemRelations plugin. The general descriptions I changed in po/mo files, but names and descriptions of relations, which I found in formal_vocabularies.php file, don’t want to be changed, ie. changes are not visible in admin and public view.
I removed the server cache files described elsewhere, but it also doesn’t help.
How can I reset these texts to my version of changed vocabularies php file?
Borys

Hi,
I don’t use the plugin much but looking briefly at the code, it looks like the formal_vocabularies.php file is included and utilized during the plugin installation.
Have you tried to uninstall and reinstall the plugin after the file modification?

Michał

Hi,
Thank you for the answer, it helps a lot.
Is there another way to send changed Vocabulary to database (refresh this part of DB)?
I expect that work on translation with my coworkers could require many updates…

Borys

Hi miniol,
Your method is unacceptable - it destroys all existing relations (defined for items pairs) in DB!
I have to set them again - and it is not so easy…
Borys

This looks like we haven’t added those strings into the translation system. Generally strings in the __() get added to the base .pot file and translated, but those aren’t.

I see a couple possibilities for the best way to address this, but am a little unsure about which will work, let alone which is best. I’ll look in to them and report back. Either way, this is something we should probably fix on our end.

Adding the relations’ vocabulary to the translation system doesn’t solve everything, because those strings are added to the database, and this is done only during plugin installation. So there must be also a mechanism to replace them in the DB.
Plugin reinstallation is not acceptable as it destroys also all relations defined between items.

Borys

Yes on all points, especially the painful reinstallation. That’s definitely not a way to go for a fix.

The different routes I’m exploring are ways to add the strings to the .pot file, and maybe in the views, without touching the database.

So far, I’m pretty sure that that’ll have to be done manually in the template.base.pot file, then regenerate everything with those changes as described in the internationalization docs.

If you look at application/languages/Omeka.base.pot, you’ll see a lot of strings that are similarly stuffed directly into the database, and so aren’t caught by the tools that detect strings that should go into the translation system. Thus, we manually add them to Omeka.base.pot.

I’m pretty sure we’ll just have to do the same thing with all those strings that are not currently translated. It might also require changes to the view scripts.

Hi patrickmj,
I do not understand some of above - I’m not a programmer 8^)
But I could help doing some tedious manual work if you have something like that here.
Borys

So, in the core file Omeka.base.pot there are things like this

#. Dublin Core description
msgid "The Dublin Core metadata element set is common to all Omeka records, including items, files, and collections. For more information see, http://dublincore.org/documents/dces/."
msgstr ""

That puts the string about Dublin Core into the translation system, even though – like the Item Relations data we’re looking at – it get directly inserted into the database. That had to be done manually by adding it to that base.pot file.

So, I think we’ll need to do the same thing with all the strings in the formal_vocabularies.php file, creating the msgid with the text, then building that in to the translation system.

OK Patrick, I can do it, but I have 2 questions:

  1. should I put those strings into Omeka.base.pot or in the plugin’s pot file (which is called and used when plugin is active)?
  2. Where I can find Omeka.base.pot file? I cann’t find it in my installation.
    Borys

The strings for Item relations should go in the plugin’s file, /languages/template.base.pot.

Omeka.base.pot is in application/languages.

Hi,
I put all strings from formal_vocabularies.php into template.base.pot.
I hope msgstr are not needed for english version. If I should put EN strings also in msgstr - please tell me.

For Polish lang I have ca. 1/3 translated (labels and descriptions).
Please tell me if it will be of any use if I put these PL strings in this plugin’s base POT file.

I include this file below, as I don’t know any other way to send it to you 8^)

Hi Patrick,
Let me know if I did something useful …
Borys

Will do. We’ve been a bit swamped getting Omeka S out the door, but that that’s done I’ll be able to get back to this.

Just an update that now that the holidays are over, I’m diving back in to this. Thanks for your useful work! There are still some oddities I’m trying to sort out on my end, though.

I think I’ve sorted out all the oddities, and pushed up changes to transifex. Next release of this should sort out many things.

Thanks again for reporting the issue.

Hi, I found a problem similar to this in the Finnish translation of our Omeka site. Mostly the translation is good, but there are some sections which aren’t translated:

On the collection page, the “Collection items” heading as well as the “View all items” -link on the bottom of the page still appear in English, although everything else seems to be translated just fine. What should I do in order for these to appear in Finnish, too?

The quickest option is to update the .po file, then compile it into the .mo (I think there was talk about that in another thread?)

The better option is to add it to the transifex files that we use for all the translations. It won’t be as quick a fix, since it’d have to wait for a new release of the plugin, but it will benefit the most people.
