Images in item records won't display unless logged in

This is an instance of 2.6 running on Red Hat. I cloned this instance from a fully working one with the same specs, hoping to create a QA instance for testing. However in the new clone, the images in the item displays don’t show up - just links to them. Clicking one of those links brings me to a login prompt.

Permissions on the files system are wide open (777) and the apache user is owner of all. So I’m kind of stumped here. Where else should I be looking for a solution?

Well that was dumb of me! Just didn’t copy all the files into the new instance from the original source. So the links were genuinely broken.
