Change number of items returned in admin search?

Currently, when I am logged in and search for items from the Items list/browse page at the admin view, the results list displays 40 items, with additional pages if applicable.

How/where can I change the number of items displayed here? If I do make this change for the admin side, will that affect the number of items shown on a public search results list?

You can change that in the appearance settings - top navigation to Appearance, then the Settings tab.
